Taunton Walking Club now has an evening group for the summer months and a weekend group that aims to meet year-round. The meeting point may change for each walk but a map will always be available on the club website.

Midweek Walking Group During Summer 2023 our midweek group will meet for an evening walk. The meeting point and day of the week may change often so please check. Our Facebook page will normally have updates for walkers.

Saturday Group ( All Year Weather Permitting ) The emphasis is on enjoying the freedom of walking, and our weekend walk will access Somerset's lovely villages, lanes, public footpaths and byways. Please become a member of the club (it's free) and take a walk with us.

Walking is an uncomplicated way of keeping fit, and walking with a group makes it that more enjoyable.

Steart Marshes TA5 2PU
Distance: 3 or 6
Difficulty: Easy
Leader: Liz Greenaway

This walk on Saturday 13th Jan is to Steart Marshes saltmarsh & wetlands, near Cannington, NW of Bridgwater.  Something a bit different and with a very good path surface.  It is an easy flat walk, approx 3 miles on a surfaced path.

Steart Marshes is a working wetland providing flood defence for local homes and businesses, showcasing productive farmland and home to a thriving nature reserve.  It is one of the UKs newest wetlands created just 10 years ago.  We can have a gentle amble with stops at the hides to look for over-wintering birds as well as beautiful views over the estuary, interesting views to the Hinkley C construction site plus a willow sculpture trail to look out for.

The site is approx 40mins drive from Taunton (19 miles) - I would suggest going A38 via Bridgwater rather than over the Quantocks as those hilly roads are very narrow.  Please allow plenty of time to get there.

It is free to visit. There are toilets at the car park but no other facilities so please bring drinks and snacks.  It can be cold as it is exposed near the coast so please bring suitable clothing. Remember to bring your binoculars!

Please use the FB page to ask about car sharing if you want/need/happy to offer a lift.

There may be an option to do a further walk in a different part of the reserve if anyone wishes to do more on the day.  This may take us beyond lunchtime so please ensure you have plenty to eat and drink.

Please see the club website for all info.  https://taunton-fitness.uk/walking.php
